Dogs have shown up in protests for as long as people have taken to the streets. Not because anyone planned it, but because dogs live where people live, and when people push back, dogs end up in the mix. They follow their humans, guard their territory, and they follow their instincts to know which is the oppressor and which is the oppressed.

Stray dogs show up often when riots break out because the streets are their home, and possibly the two most famous stray dogs of protest are Loukanikos from the streets of Athens, Greece, who appeared in many riots after the financial crisis and supported the people against the police force, and Negros Matapacos (Black Cop-Killer), who didn’t actually kill any police but did participate in the Santiago student riots of Chile. He was cared for by a student named Maria Campos who let him stay in her accommodation bed and blessed him before each battle.
